Twice this past week Jimbo had the entire team sit in the locker room together and wait out lightning storms. One day they sat for almost 2.5 hours before practice could resume. Jimbo said he would have waited until midnight if he had to…that practice is just too important and since you are limited by the NCAA on how many practices you can have prior to the season he will not squander an opportunity. He stressed again the importance of needing an indoor practice facility and rumors are that the funding for the facility is almost complete. I’m sure we will hear more in the weeks to come.

Jermaine Thomas has earned the starting position at RB again.

Sophomore Xavier Rhodes and sophomore Greg Reid appear to be the two starters at CB for Samford. Rhodes in particular has drawn consistent praise from Jimbo for how well he plays. Ochuko Jenije who started at CB for 9 games last year has moved to safety. The senior has drawn praise from Fisher for his maturity and football savvy.

Despite gaining almost 25 pounds Fisher and fellow players say that DT Everett Dawkins is actually quicker now – and considerably stronger.

All that is being said about our LB’s is that this may be the biggest and baddest collective group we have ever had.

One surprise is our starting WR’s for game one. Sophomore’s Willie Haulstead (6’3”) and Rodney Smith (6’6”) have surpassed juniors Bert Reed and Taiwan Eastering. Fisher did state, however, that he will have a solid rotation of 6 WR’s every game so we will see all WR’s play every game.

Both kicker Dustin Hopkins and punter Shawn Powell have both made gigantic gains and coach Gran demands consistency (both players say strength coach Viloria has helped them tremendously). In fact Hopkins has been kicking 60+ yard FG’s before practice and in a live situation yesterday he missed a 60 yarder. And no, it wasn’t short and they say that it was long enough to have been a 65+ yards long.

In local news, former FSU and Cowboys player Mario Edwards is now coaching and running camps in the Dallas area at his sons high school. His son by the way is being heavily recruited by FSU. He will be a senior this year.

FSU just received a verbal commitment from James Wilder, the #3 player ranked by Rivals in the country. He will play RB for us. HUGE commitment and further cements FSU having one of the top classes in the country next year. Oh yeah, he grew up a gator fan but chose us because of Jimbo, Dawsey and coach Gran and we have a family atmosphere. See him in action »

Remember back in early January when Jimbo brought in his hand picked staff he also brought in a new strength and conditioning coach named Vic Viloria. Vic had been at SMU and Jimbo has been a fan of his ever since they coached together at LSU with Nick Saban. The prior strength staff consisted of 3 coaches, now there are over 8 I believe and every station where players are working out they have a coach….much, much different than what we had in the past. Jimbo also brought in a nutritionist – every players meals are monitored and players eat together for every meal (also a major change from the past). Some players have been put on diets to drop weight (i.e., running back Debrale Smiley who has dropped weight but is still a bulldozer at over 240 pounds) while most have been training to put on ‘good weight’ which is muscle mass. Last year we had one offensive player over 300 pounds now we have 5 – both of our starting tackles weigh over 300 so Trickett is getting the results he wants. In fact in an interview on fan day he blatantly said he is finally getting the type of workout regimen/attention that he has wanted for his OL since he got there 2+ years ago. On the DL we now have 3 DT’s over 300. Jimbo has said that the days of seeing FSU players dominated at the line of scrimmage are going away. Oh, I will finish this by saying it is believed that our two starting safeties will give FSU the biggest starting lineup at that position in college football – one is at 222 and the other 230. (Oh, and we also now employ a sports psychologist for the players).

The team is now out of shells and in full gear as of Tuesday (two-a-days have officially started now). The first scrimmage is scheduled for tomorrow. One thing to note is that Chris Thompson is still the #1 running back – coaches are saying he is by far the most consistent back we have but Jermaine Thomas is fighting hard to get his starting job back. According to Fisher no one other than Ponder and Hudson (all American guard) have a guaranteed starting position. Competition is tight and players appear to be working extremely hard. Gone are the days when tenure assured you a starting role. The best players will play…period (per Fisher).

One final nugget is that the indoor practice facility design has been completed and a location selected. Jimbo is working really hard with the boosters to get the funding to build it since Tally is the lightning capital and when practice is interrupted/cancelled due to weather they have absolutely no where to go to practice full speed. Apparently we are getting close but we are still quite a few million short of getting this done any time soon. The players dorm, however, has been approved and construction will begin shortly. To comply with NCAA rules 51% of the occupants will be students who will pay rent (hence this facility becomes self-funding) while the remaining 49% will be the entire football team who will be segregated from the rent paying students. It is all part of Jimbo’s belief that the team is a family and they need to eat together and sleep together – a lot of this unity is already apparent and Christian Ponder is a big leader in this arena in holding each other accountable. In fact there is a unity counsel that sets penalties for players breaking team rules (i.e., not going to class, etc.). Of note, however, not only does the player who broke the rules have to run gassers but the entire team has to do them because of that players poor decision.

WR Jarmon Forston kicked off the team for not following team policy. Truth be told he failed multiple drug tests and unfortunately ESPN somehow got wind of it and of course plastered it all over the airwaves.

RB Tavares Pressley out for season with a torn ACL.

DT Moses McCray finally got over 300lbs but he too is out for the year with a torn ACL…this one is going to hurt. But the good news is that the JC transfer Amp McCloud is over 300 pounds and is getting rave reviews thus far from Jimbo so hopefully he will be a quality player in the rotation.

Incoming FR LB’s look like the real deal. Christian Jones and Jeff Luc are absolute physical freaks...normally I do not gush over any player (especially an incoming FR) but wow, if they can play as well as reported we are solid at LB for a few years.

Speaking of LB’s Nigel Bradham is up to 240 pounds, Vince Williams is at 250, Mister Alexander is at 235, etc. We are finally recruiting and playing physically dominant LB’s... no more finesse players. It will be a welcomed sight and I have no doubt that Coach Hudson will put nothing but quality on the field. Oh, and the DE’s are raving about their new coach DJ Elliott (came from Rice) and of course, has a dotted line path to Jimbo and Stoop... hopefully we will see some productivity via new scheme and technique. Look for Jenkins, Stevens, Hicks and incoming FR Werner (kid from Germany) to make some significant contributions this year. In fact I think Werner is already around 280+ pounds.
